Acts 3:19 “ Repent ye
Acts 3:19 “reform ye, therefore, and turn back, for your sins being blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,” (Young’s Literal Translation)
“The word opwV, rendered "when," is commonly rendered that, and denotes the final cause, or the reason why a thing is done, Mt 2:23; 5:16,45, etc. By many it has been supposed to have this sense here, and to mean "repent--in order that the times of refreshing may come," etc. If used in this sense, it means that their repentance and forgiveness would be the means of introducing peace and joy. Others have rendered it in accordance with our translation, "when," meaning that they might find peace in the day when Christ should return to judgment; which return would be to them a day of rest, though of terror to the wicked. The grammatical construction will admit of either, though the former is more in accordance with the usual use of the word. The objection to the former is, that it is not easy to see how their repenting, etc., should be the means of introducing the times of refreshing. And this, also, corresponds very little with the design of Peter in this discourse.” (Taken from Albert Barnes’ Notes on the New Testament)
“when the times of refreshing shall come--rather, "in order that the times of
refreshing may come"; that long period of repose, prosperity and joy, which all the
prophets hold forth to the distracted Church and this miserable world, as eventually to
come, and which is here, as in all the prophets, made to turn upon the national conversion
of Israel.” (JFB Commentary)
“When the times of refreshing shall come. The Revision is correct, "That so there may
come," etc.” (The People’s New Testament Commentary)
“When the times of refreshing shall come; the connection of these words with the following verses shows that their primary reference must be to that great season of refreshing when Christ shall come again from heaven to judge his enemies, and give rest to his people.” (Family Bible Notes)
You can see from the above comments that there are differing opinions on which way this verse should be translated. But the truth of the matter can be found by searching the scriptures.
Isaiah 1:18-20 “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.”
Isaiah 43:25-28 “I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins. Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified. Thy first father hath sinned, and thy teachers have transgressed against me. Therefore I have profaned the princes of the sanctuary, and have given Jacob to the curse, and Israel to reproaches.”
Isaiah 44:22 “I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.”
Jeremiah 50:19-20 “And I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead. In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I reserve.”
Jeremiah 31:10-14 “Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock. For the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and ransomed him from the hand of him that was stronger than he. Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the LORD, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all. Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow. And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the LORD.”
Isaiah 28:12 “To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.”
Romans 11:25-27 “For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.”
By studying the verses above, you can see that the blotting out of Israel's sins will take place during the times of refreshing at the second coming of Christ.
This means that the reading in Young's and the NKJV and other modern versions is a false statement. According to them, the times of refreshing will come as a result of Israel's sins being blotted out. In truth the times of refreshing and Israel's sins being blotted out will be a result of Israel's repentance and conversion.
